The Ultimate Los Angeles Travel Guide

Los Angeles is more than Hollywood and palm-lined streets. It’s slow mornings by the ocean, afternoons spent exploring some of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods and golden-hour drives along the coast. From the laid-back feel of Malibu and Santa Monica to the energy of West Hollywood and the polished streets of Beverly Hills, every part of LA feels a little different — and that’s exactly what makes the city so special. This guide brings together my favorite places, must-see spots and helpful tips for experiencing the best of Los Angeles — whether it’s your first visit or one of many.

LA AT A GLANCE

Ideal trip length: 4–5 Days

Getting Around: Rental Car / Uber / Metro

Known For: Hollywood, Beaches, Entertainment, Shopping & Food

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Los Angeles is a great year-round destination, but spring and fall offer some of the best weather with fewer crowds.

March–May | Best for Mild Weather

Expect pleasant temperatures of around 21–23°C (70–73°F), fewer tourists and often more affordable accommodation. Spring is a great time for sightseeing before the hotter summer months arrive.

June–August | Best for Beach Days

Summer brings long, sunny days with up to 11–12 hours of sunshine and very little rain. Temperatures can get much hotter inland, while coastal areas like Santa Monica and Venice stay more comfortable. In early summer, the coast can experience a marine layer with cloudy or foggy mornings that often clear later in the day.

Good to Know: Heat waves can push temperatures above 40°C (104°F) in inland parts of Los Angeles. Wildfire risk can also increase during hot, dry and windy periods, particularly from summer into fall.

September–October | Warm & Less Crowded

Expect warm temperatures of around 26–28°C (79–82°F), plenty of sunshine and fewer crowds at many of LA’s major attractions. It’s a great time to combine sightseeing with beach days.

November | An Underrated Time to Visit

November is an often-overlooked month for visiting Los Angeles, marking the transition from warm fall weather into the mild winter season. Daytime temperatures are usually around 21–24°C (70–75°F), with plenty of sunshine and relatively little rain. Evenings can be noticeably cooler at around 10–14°C (50–57°F), so bring a light jacket or sweater.

December–February | Mild & Quieter

Winter remains mild, with daytime temperatures around 18–20°C (64–68°F). This is the rainiest time of year, although rainy days are still relatively limited. The ocean is generally too cool for most swimmers, but flights and hotels can often be more affordable.

Know the Entry Requirements

If you're traveling internationally, make sure your passport and travel documents meet US entry requirements. Travelers from eligible Visa Waiver Program countries generally need an approved ESTA before traveling to the United States by air or sea. Apply through the official US government website and check the current requirements well before departure.

LA is huge

Los Angeles is much more spread out than it might look on a map. Try to group your plans by area instead of traveling back and forth between places like Santa Monica, Hollywood and Downtown LA.

Traffic is real

Getting around LA can take longer than expected, especially during rush hour. Always allow some extra time between stops and avoid packing too much into one day. Download offline maps in Google Maps before your trip to save mobile data while navigating around the city.

Choose your hotel location carefully

Where you stay can make a huge difference to your trip. Pick an area close to the places you plan to visit most to save yourself a lot of driving time.

Consider renting a car

Having a car is one of the easiest ways to explore Los Angeles, especially if you want to visit different neighborhoods, the beaches or places outside the city. Uber can quickly become expensive when you’re covering longer distances.

Book ahead

Popular restaurants, attractions and experiences can fill up quickly. Make reservations and book must-do activities in advance, especially if there’s somewhere you definitely don’t want to miss.

Mobile Data

I recommend getting an eSIM for the USA* before your trip so you have mobile data as soon as you arrive.

Beverly Hills

Best for luxury, shopping & an upscale stay, with everything from iconic five-star hotels to more affordable options nearby.

Inglewood

Best for easy airport access & a more affordable stay, with convenient connections to LAX and the beaches.

I often stay in Inglewood when I’m in Los Angeles. It’s especially convenient if you want to be close to LAX while still having easy access to the west side of the city — and hotels here are often much more affordable than in other parts of LA.

HOW TO GET AROUND

Los Angeles is incredibly spread out, so knowing how to get around can make a huge difference to your trip.

RENTAL CAR

My recommended option

Renting a car is one of the easiest ways to explore Los Angeles, and picking it up at LAX is pretty stress-free. Once you leave the terminal, look for the purple “Rental Car Shuttles” signs outside. The free shuttle will pick you up there and take you directly to the LAX Rental Car Center, where the major rental companies are located.

My tip: I usually pick up my rental car right after landing — having your own car makes exploring LA, Malibu and the surrounding beaches so much easier.

Find Rental Cars in Los Angeles*

UBER & LYFT

Best for nights out & shorter trips

Convenient when you don’t want to drive, but longer rides across Los Angeles can quickly get expensive.

METRO

LA’s Metro can be useful for certain areas, but it won’t always be the easiest option depending on where you’re staying and what you want to see.

PARKING

Always check the signs

Street parking rules can be confusing, and restrictions vary by neighborhood. Always check signs carefully before leaving your car.

TRAFFIC

Plan extra time

Distances can be deceiving in LA. A drive that looks short on the map can take much longer during busy hours.

DAY 05 — CHOOSE YOUR LA DAY

For your final day, choose what you’re still in the mood for. Spend the day at Universal Studios or Disneyland, explore Downtown LA, or slow things down with another beach day along the Southern California coast.

FINAL TIPS

Little things that can make your LA trip even better.

Don't try to see everything

Los Angeles has so much to offer, and trying to fit everything into one trip can quickly become exhausting. Pick the places you really want to see and leave some room for spontaneous stops along the way.

Plan your days by area

Group nearby neighborhoods and attractions together whenever possible. It’ll save you a lot of unnecessary driving and give you more time to actually enjoy each place.

Make reservations

Popular restaurants and experiences can book up quickly, especially on weekends. If there’s somewhere you really want to go, reserve it ahead of time.

Always check parking signs

Parking rules can change from street to street. Take an extra minute to read the signs carefully before leaving your car — LA parking tickets are not the souvenir you want to bring home.

Bring a light layer

Even when the days are warm and sunny, evenings near the coast can feel surprisingly cool. Keep a light jacket or cardigan with you, especially for beach days and rooftop evenings.

Leave room for the unplanned

Some of the best LA moments happen between the big attractions —

a spontaneous beach stop, a cute café or a sunset you weren’t planning to watch. Don’t schedule every minute of your trip.

READY TO EXPLORE LOS ANGELES?

Los Angeles is one of those places you can visit again and again and still discover something new. From mornings by the ocean and afternoons exploring iconic neighborhoods to rooftop drinks and California sunsets, there’s so much more to LA than you can fit into one trip.

I hope this guide helps you plan your own Los Angeles adventure, discover a few new favorites and make the most of your time in the City of Angels.

Save this guide for later — and enjoy LA!
